“At that time, a decree said everyone had to go to his family’s town to register. Joseph was from the family of David, so he and Mary went to Bethlehem, which was David’s home.” Luke 2:1
The Journey to Bethlehem begins. How awful for a woman 9 months pregnant to have to travel away from home....and on a donkey, no less! Why did you plan it that way? Of course, this journey was probably a lot more normal for Mary and Joseph then it seems to us. This was travel they were used to. They were obeying the law. This whole census thing not only actually can be tied to recorded history, but it accents the fact that Joseph was a descendant of David and fulfills the promise of the Savior being David’s kinsman and coming from Bethlehem.
What seems a puzzle to us, falls in place when seen in hindsight. The most memorable, remarkable parts of the “Christmas Story” are remembered precisely because they seem odd and extraordinary. The story has elements that every child and grown-up who hears it will remember precisely because they have such drama.
No matter how many times we hear the story or sing the songs or see the nativity scene it seems wonderful and perfect. You truly are a wondrous God and really know how to build excitement and wonder and love into a story that is 2000 years old and seems new and perfect every year. Thank you! amen
