Heavenly Father,
Inheriting the land, the earth…what does this phrase mean? “The meek shall inherit the land (earth).” Elsewhere in Psalm 37 others are described as inheriting the earth….”those who hope on the LORD”…”those the LORD blesses”….”the righteous”…..as well as ”the meek”. If we “hope on the LORD” than we trust You as our God, our Father, our Creator. We expect to receive blessings from you because you love us and care for us. We come to you. This requires the next step…”meekness”…to see that you are holy and we are sinful, and that you are supreme and in charge, and we are to bow down seeking your presence and forgiveness. That brings the 3rd step…”those the LORD blesses”….you are able to bless us when we seek you humbly. You want to give us love and care for us, if we come and wait and ask. Next is “the righteous”….we only become righteous through Jesus Christ, the blessing you sent to save us and to restore us as your children. We are made righteous through the blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ, and inherit all he inherits. In verse 34 it says: “He will exalt you to inherit the land”. We hope and trust in you, we become meek and repentant, you bless us and make us righteous through Christ. So we have moved from initial hope to being exalted by you and given all that you have for us! The land, the earth that we inherit is your kingdom, eternal life with you, dwelling in your presence where we have all that is necessary or wanted. Verse 11 ends with: “…and enjoy great peace”. That is our reward…the peace of your presence found when we are in harmony with your will. A righted relationship that makes all well and peaceful and perfect. The righteousness we gain in Jesus Christ is all we are made for, all we need, all that will satisfy and bring peace. Thank you! Amen.
